The pillar of the Detroit boxing community died Sunday night at age 59 from complications related to COVID-19.
Premier Boxing Champions has lost a member of its family. Ali Salaam, father and trainer of former unified world super welterweight champion Tony Harrison, died late Sunday night at a Detroit area hospital from complications related to COVID-19. He was 59.
Salaam was a pillar of the Detroit boxing community. He was part of a fighting family lineage that included his father, Henry Hank, a respected middleweight who won 62 fights between 1953 and 1972.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Salaam boxed professionally as a welterweight from 1984 to 1989. As a trainer, he guided the career of his son Tony, who won the unified world 154-pound title in December 2018. Salaam’s son Lloyd played professional basketball in Europe.
