Highlights

  • —Under new trainer Ismael Salas, Tomoki Kameda unveiled a tweak to his style that saw him fighting patiently and effectively while moving backward. It was evident how well it worked early in the second round when Kameda landed a big counter left hook to set the tone.

  • —Jamie McDonnell responded by consistently working the jab and playing to his height advantage while boxing from range and jabbing his way back into the fight in the middle rounds.

  • —In the 12th round, McDonnell connected with a right against a turning Kameda to send the latter to the canvas. Turns out he didn’t need the point, as McDonnell locked up a comfortable decision on all three judges' scorecards.

Fresh match, same result for Tomoki Kameda, who came up short in his rematch against British 118-pound world champion Jamie McDonnell.

Kameda came out a much more patient fighter under the direction of new trainer Ismael Salas and was successful with that particularly in the early rounds as he was able to get underneath the taller McDonell’s shots and counter well.

Eventually, though, McDonnell found the range and peppered Kameda through the middle rounds to jab his way back into the fight.

The seesaw affair came to a head in the 12th round as Kameda unleashed an aggressive attack, but caught a right from McDonnell while he was turning that put him on the ground.

In the end, the judges saw it as 116-111, 115-112 and 117-110, all for McDonnell, who retained his world title.
